Step 1: slice on transients, not on the grid. Enable transient detection and let the engine place a slice point at the start of every hit. Cutting exactly where a sound begins keeps each chop clean, while grid-based cuts tend to land mid-decay and create clicks. If the loop has dense percussion, lower the detection sensitivity so only the strongest transients produce slices; for a sparse melodic loop, raise it to catch softer notes.
Step 2: match slice length to the loop's role. A rhythmic drum loop tolerates very short chops — a sixteenth note each is common. A pad or ambient texture, however, falls apart when cut too fine; use fewer, longer slices so each chord has time to breathe. When in doubt, audition the loop with half as many slices as you first planned.
Step 3: keep the groove, lose the robot. If you quantize every chop perfectly to the grid, the result feels mechanical. Two settings preserve the feel of the original: groove extraction, which maps the timing of the source loop onto your chops, and swing, which delays every off-beat slice by a few percent of the step. Small amounts — five to fifteen percent — add motion without sounding sloppy. You can also nudge individual chops a few milliseconds late for a laid-back pocket.
Step 4: rearrange with a plan. Do not shuffle slices at random. Work in four-bar or eight-bar blocks: keep the original pattern for the first block, swap two chops in the second, and reverse one slice as a fill into the third. Muting the first hit of a block creates a breath that listeners feel without noticing. Use choke groups so overlapping slices cut each other off, keeping fast rearrangements tight instead of muddy.
Step 5: resample and repeat. Bounce your rearranged chops to a new audio file and treat it as a brand-new loop. Run it through the same workflow again, or through your effect chain, and you will get variations the original sample never contained. Two passes of chopping and resampling are usually enough — beyond that, the material tends to lose its character.
The pattern that ties it together: transient slicing for clean chops, groove settings for human timing, block-based rearrangement for structure, and resampling for depth.
